There is something about standing in a room that doesn't exist yet—water on the floor, lights waiting to catch you—that makes time feel optional. I am sixty-four and I have learned that stillness is not emptiness. It is the deepest kind of presence. The coat is heavy but I wear it like it's nothing. That's the trick, isn't it? To make weight feel like nothing. To make looking feel like not trying.
