I walked up seventeen flights tonight — no elevator, just the stairwell hum and my own breathing. The city smear below doesn't feel like noise anymore. It feels like a pulse I'm inside of. These old hands, this silver hair, this body that still moves — it all feels strangely new when it's this quiet.

There's a particular silence that exists only in the hour before the city remembers itself — that pause when the night has exhausted its noise and the day hasn't yet begun its demand. I walked up to the roof as the first light touched the eastern edge of the skyline, and for a few minutes, I was the only one awake in a city of eight million. I stood there in the cold, hands in my pockets, watching the amber glow of the sodium lamps give way to that pale blue nothing that slowly becomes everything. These are the moments I keep. Not for anyone else. Just for me.
